Friday night visit with MJ

We went by to see MJ and tell her how much she is loved by all. We had a great visit which allowed her son Brian and his wife Rachel to see her for the first time. She had just gottenback from another CAT scan which we will not get the results from until late tonight or maybe tomorrow. The good news is the nurses said she put up a fight, and even tried to pull her breathing tube out. That would not be good but was wonderful uplift to us that she was responding. When the doctors lowered her medication to give her a exam he got a thumbs up!!! Plus the nurse commented she saw movement in both legs...YES!!!!!!! Amie also saw her put her legs together. This is slow small progress but means so much. We can't wait for things to stabilize so her medication can be lowered and we find out more. Right now every time they lower her meds her ICP goes up (the pressure inside skull). The Doctors say we just need to hurry up and wait. We are just letting her rest and let the body heal itself. thanks for the comments and prayers because they really help. Love to all-from little brother Frank (okay...maybe not so little)

This waiting is so HARD. I can't imagine what you guys are going through. I just feel Mary Jo is going to come through this. She has so many people praying and pulling for her. Thank you so much for this blog. It is so comforting for all of us who are concerned and want to be updated. Please let us know if there is anything you need. Love you guys.

This is Ann typing on Saturday morning.

Loved Linda's story and thought I'd add another one. This was years ago, and I had some huge reading glasses and sunglasses. Mary Jo said (and believe me, I was seeking her advice on this issue), "The smaller the glasses, the younger the person."

So I invested (Dollar Store, don't get excited) in these tiny little glasses and sunglasses in a futile attempt to make people think I was a teenager. Then everybody starts wearing those Jackie O glasses, and I called Mary Jo and told her my predicament.

Mary Jo laughed and laughed hysterically -- what an infectious laugh she has -- and said, "I guess it's just a moving target."

Hang in their guys. That thumbs-up sign made people's hearts turn over across the county.

Love,
Ann, John & Paden

Holy smokes. I meant Theresa. Back to the old glasses. Ann

P.S. Nobody would think this funnier than MJ.

Up early and first thing is first, check on MJ. Thank you for taking the time to do this. I am thrilled by the news of both legs moving. That news makes me feel like a small light has come on. My best to you all.

We know how strong MJ is and will continue to pray for her.

I keep a box of Snackwells cookies at my desk(which only a select few know about, oops!)and MJ loves to come and trade me work for them. MJ - I can't wait to give you the whole box next time.
We love you and miss your smiling face.

Last week in the mail I received a #10 envelope written in MJ's hand.

Well, you know in this internet day and age how thrilling it is to receive snail mail, so I ripped into it, anticipating some great news of a surprise visit to Chicago or something.

Lo and behold out of the envelope fell not a personalized letter -- instead it was a chain letter and six pre-addressed mailing labels addressed to MJ -- inviting me to join an informal book club. You know, send the letter and her address label to six friends and send one book to so-and-so and -- voila! -- I am to receive 1,326 paperbooks in return.

Usually I'm a procrastinator (as well as a chain letter hater) but this time right away I affixed MJ's address on six copies of the letter and wrote a handwritten note to my friends: "Don't be annoyed; just shut up and send out the book. I don't want to disappoint my cousin MJ."

Forgot all about it until yesterday, when I received a paperback book in the mail.

Then I called one of the friends to tell about it and she said,

"I just mailed a book to MJ!"

A small and weird thing but shows how a connection can be made and a prayer to be sent up on her behalf by a complete stranger.

It's so good to hear the Thumbs Up story! Thanks so much for sharing with us.

Love you all,
Linda

Hello and much love to Mary Jo, Davey, Brian, Amie and so many family and friends...

We just wanted everyone to know that Kelley and I are thinking of Mary Jo so often and sending absoulute faith and fervently positive thoughts for a full and speedy recovery.

These are the toughest times... it must be so hard, just waiting, hanging on the smallest improvements, but we must know that Mary Jo is healing, and that the best thing for her is time and rest. Good things are soon to come.

We have personally known of two people with serious head injuries who made a full recovery in the past two years. Just four months ago, an acquaintance of ours here in Florida had an accident on his motorcycle (without a helmet). His skull was fractured in several places, his brain was swollen and badly bruised, and he was in an induced coma for nearly three weeks. Today, he is walking normally, talking incessantly, and playing the piano with the same dexterity that he had before his accident.

The other case was more serious. The daughter of a man I know suffered an accidental fall from a parking garage. Three floors and hit her head at the bottom. The injuries were extremely serious and she was fortunate to live. Her recovery was much slower, but within months she was beginning to talk and laugh, and within less than a year she was walking with assistance. She has now recovered 90% or more of her former mobility and abilities.

It is a tremendous sign that Mary Jo is responding to things so early in her recovery, and knowing what a fighter she is, and how dedicated she is to her family and friends, we are 100% certain that we will see MJ back in her same high spirits and full of life and energy, sooner than we might think possible.

With 100% faith, love and support,

Jon & Kelley Herring
